About the ExcelsiorThe Excelsior was brought into the fleet due to the simple fact that we needed more modern ships, and we had newly designed equipment that needed to be tested. The only way to test such equipment, was to build a ship and do it for real. So that's what we did, and that's how she earned her nickname as the "Great Experiment".
The name Excelsior debuted from the movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, where a new starship named the U.S.S Excelsior was assigned to test out a whole new computer/propulsion system. Since Brandon had the same basic idea in mind when designing the Excelsior, and the name Excelsior sounded good, that's what name she was given. |
